La Route verte, a healthy way to see Argenteuil

Argenteuil did its due diligence and opened its territory to the popular “Route verte” that criss-crosses over 4300 km of Quebec, a route that can be entirely followed by bicycle, this achievement was done not without hiccups. In fact making the Argenteuil region accessible to bicyclists in a secure fashion was an invitation impossible to pass for the county of Argenteuil  and its multiple partners.

Today the « Route verte » goes through four of Argenteuil's municipalities, they are; Saint-Andre d' Argenteuil, Brownsburg-Chatham, Grenville et Grenville-sur-Ia-Rouge, for a total of 54 km. Since its official inauguration in November 2005, the “Route verte” of Argenteuil grows in popularity amongst cyclists,  hikers, skaters and skiers for many reasons.

The Desjardins gangway, this impressive piece of work of 65 meters in length overhanging the north river that brings you to the Von Allmen multi resource wooded area. The Desjardins Argenteuil gangway is without saying the most distinctive element of the Route verte” in Argenteuil and has quickly become the signature part of the route. Connecting two coveted shore banks, this imposing structure is by itself worth the detour.

Leaving the famous gangway there is nothing but an asphalted surface, the user is literally plunged in to the forest. The pathway undulates softly between the trees, sometimes invited to take a break by reading one of the information panels on your path or to let the kids stretch their legs in one of the playing modules found on your way. You will also come across other pathways named after birds, a nice way perhaps to remember that man shares this little part of heaven.  A showcase from which you can catch a sight of the landscape that is half forest, half aquatic, a stopover is a must as to take a walk through the marsh where you will hear amphibians croak.

A few mores pushes on the pedals will permit you to get to the old railway tracks, straitening out the pathway, and that, on many more kilometres right to the Brownsburg-Chatham municipal camp ground that is situated on the banks of the Outaouais River.

The taste of water
Knowing that the territory of Argenteuil has as many lakes as Swiss cheese has holes and has just as many rivers, its no wonder that the “Route verte” makes its way alongside many of its water ways. From east to west she is in close contact with the North river, the Outaouais river and the Rivière Rouge.  This trajectory is composed of many particular attractions such as picnic areas found on the waters edge, panoramic views can be found on many kilometers.

The circuit
A vast majority of the circuit is a shared circuit, along provincial routes such as; route 344, 327 and 148. You ride the shoulders that are built for this purpose. Other parts are also shared with municipal road ways, otherwise the rest is on site.

This 54 km bicycling link permits cyclists to connect the Laurentiens to the Outaouais region. Province wide, the “Route verte” constitutes the largest “green” site of the decade. In the county of Argenteuil, it's not yet finished, other pathways will be soon completed and other major events are planned. And to say that its already beautiful !

Argenteuil, is an art of living. Let her reveal herself

« What I like here is the landscape, the view from above is sprinkled with water, lakes everywhere, dressed in fluffy forests, opened on valleys that reek of silence. It's inspirering! »
Carroll the artist from Harrington

“It's nice to know that I'm leaving a piece of history to my children and grand children when I chose Argenteuil to live in. All it takes is to follow the footprints left by the ancesters: first the French, the Americans and the Scottish then the Irishman. You will find traces of them all over the territory. The history here is beautiful because it's plural.”
Sweet Marie-Louise, mother of Pierre, grand-mother to Charles, from Saint-André d'Argenteuil

“The last time that I saw my uptown friends, we visited 36 churches in all of Argenteuil ! I was as impressed as they were, even better, I was proud…This is my home here! It was august so we added to our circuit “La Route des Arts”. They left with intense souvenir exchanges with the artist painter, the sculpter,  the glass blower, the jeweller, the potter and the craftsman.”
The bubbling Thomas the “Barron” of Lakefield

« I've been here for 10 years now, if I hardly gotten older, Argenteuil has already changed a lot and that enchants me! Theatrical productions, La Cours des Miracles, l'itinérante Ma tente a lire pour son fiston à son camps de jour, On se donne des airs, Dimanche en Tam Tam…Its so very much culturally different! »
Christiane,  Grenville-sur-la-Rouge resident.

«  The CAMMAC musical center, both feet in the water…WOW! What a duo! Summer Sundays, after a mind-blowing concert, me and my wife also come to share a bruch with our neighbors. Its not a secret, our daughter now a pianist, spent many weeks at this summer camp! We have adopted this small corner of paradise!”
Jean-Sébastien of Brownsburg-Chatham

“Me and my friends, love everything about culture, and in our parts, its often free : visual art expositions, open air concerts, festivals, every major popular gatherings and all our themed routes, its crazy! When the time comes to recharge one's batteries, you can opte for the Tam Bao Son bouddhiste monastery, for the Saint-Monastère-Vierge-Marie.-la-consolatrice  for its  goat cheeses, ah yes!”
The effervescent Louisa from Wentworth, student and future nurse at the CSSS

« My parents every season would always sign me up for activities at the Maison de la culture. I go along with my best friend. I'm also a subscriber of the library, every week I borrow a new book to read. Today I have chosen a novel, its so cool because it is written by a local author!”
The young Jean-Marc from Lachute
